The pear-shaped pearl on this necklace – the equivalent to 55 carats – previously formed part of the crown jewels of Spain. Richard Burton bought it at auction in 1969 and Dame Elizabeth Taylor later commissioned Cartier to design a new mount of pearls and rubies to offset what she called “the most perfect pearl in the world".
