1900 Dress by Douellieut, Paris. Silk taffeta embellished with pastel florals, ribbon, lace, and net. Worn by Mrs. Bertha Honoré Palmer who achieved a place in European society that was extremely rare for an American. The press alluded to reports that she once "spurned the hand of King Peter of Serbia ... spent $ 200,000 in a single season at Ascot ... and played golf with King Edward." At Ascot, England's Queen Alexandria reportedly bowed to Mrs. Palmer in 1909.
