•Hel (Hela)
Not far from one of the roots of Yggdrasil lived Hel, the goddess of the Underworld condemned by Odin to rule the realm of the dead. She was the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda and was not only a dark, terrifying figure, but also a very sad one. Her companions, possessions and qualities reveal the kind of doomed existence that Hel not only experienced, but offered to those who must pass through her realm. Her body was divided into the beautiful upper part, flesh-colored and living, and the darker lower half which was putrid flesh, so black that it was invisible, but stank in the darkness. Her hall in Niflheim was called Eljudnir. Anyone who died of old age or illness would have to enter her miserable realm and wait until Loki returned to call back his daughter to fight at the battle of Ragnarok.
