While I was stationed in England, my British co-worker (Terry) shared about this experience about the previous NCOIC who was a TSgt (E6).
Whenever the military guys went somewhere: Commander’s Call, site visits, or squadron visits, the young airmen (E1-4) usually fought for the front seat of the six-pax truck. And of course, they always played “shotgun” whenever they could.
However, when the NCOIC went along, he always DEMANDED to sit in the front seat! Why? Few reasons:
He was the highest ranking and as highest ranking, he is entitled to the front seat.
He was also the oldest and even if rank didn’t play an issue, he is still entitled to the front seat.
He won’t drive because he was the highest rank and as such, he was entitled to be driven. In fa t, if he really wanted to, he can ORDER who is going to drive!
Terry, didn’t like the fact that the NCOIC was pushing the young airmen around. So, after doing some enquiring with the human relations office, he was told that his rank is actually equivalent to a Captain in the US Air Force, and that the only person he actually has to listen to is his direct supervisor…the commander (a Lt. Col ) of the squadron.
