This recently happened to a friend of mine. She’s in an MFA program and one of her professors assigned a really expensive textbook (around $150) because he was mentioned in it and wanted to increase sales by having all of his students buy it. This is blatantly the only reason he assigned it. He wasn’t even getting any money from the sales—it was about the ego boost. Discussing one of the sections in class was an afterthought meant to justify the book’s purchase.
