A few years ago I was a freshman in a small university. The usual history professor was the acting dean of arts so the university hired a professor on a year long (potentially renewable) contract to teach the courses instead.
This professor had experience teaching graduate programs and you could tell they struggled with teaching history 101. But overall the first semester went without a hitch, they were pretty well liked, students were enjoying themselves, and doing pretty well.
